Press Release

Canada-Italy Trade Mission 2017

Montréal, Toronto, Vancouver, April 21st, 2017 – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s Minister of International Trade, will be leading a Canadian business delegation to Italy with the support of the Italian Chambers of Commerce in Canada (Québec, Ontario and Canada West), promoting Canadian innovation and know-how to prospective Italian trade partners. From May 28th to May 30th, the mission will explore new opportunities and strengthen existing relationships between Canadian and Italian businesses, with stops in Milan and Rome.

The Italian Chambers of Commerce in Canada, with offices in Montréal, Toronto and Vancouver, recognized as strong advocates and capable facilitators of bilateral economic and business relations between Canada and Italy, were called upon by the Canadian Government to provide their advice and market insights, as well as leverage their strong relationships with industry stakeholders and Italy’s Chamber of Commerce network to assure the mission’s success.

The Italian market is one of Europe’s largest, and once the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will be ratified, it will offer a significant expansion of opportunities in the region for Canadian businesses and entrepreneurs. Removal of non-tariff barriers restricting and impeding the movement of key personnel and capital along with enhanced access to public procurement are among the key features of CETA which will benefit Canadian enterprises. Bilateral trade between Canada and Italy accounts for almost $10 billion, Canada’s 9th largest trading partner.

Minister Champagne observes: “Canadian companies from all regions and all sizes will benefit from unprecedented access to Italy and the EU – a vast market of more than 500 million people with annual imports that are worth more than Canada’s GDP. Better access to this market will unlock countless opportunities for our exporters, innovative entrepreneurs and service providers, and make Canadian products more competitive on European shelves”.

Canada and Italy’s economies are complementary in many sectors. With the advent of CETA, opportunities in export/import, commercial partnerships as well as innovation and technology- driven partnerships will increase. Canada already boasts experienced and qualified Italian human resources, who have distinguished themselves in their respective fields, whether in business, academia or other sectors. This 2nd generation agreement will undoubtedly increase the flow of skilled human capital from both countries.

Canadian companies looking to do business in Europe and Italy, Europe’s 4th largest economy, must therefore position themselves and take advantage of increased access to these lucrative markets.

The mission’s program will focus on agri-food, aerospace, defense, as well as information and communications technologies (ICT) opportunities in Italy. Companies with expertise in these sectors will be invited to participate.
